AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES

  3. Celebrating Black History activities and resources
  4. African American experience from slavery through the first years of the 20th Century at the Library of Congress. These online pamphlets, authored by African Americans and others, were originally published from 1824 through 1909. Students can view high resolution reproductions of the publications, which focus on abolition and slavery, African colonization, emancipation, suffrage, politics, reconstruction and education. Among the authors represented are Frederick Douglas, Kelly Miller, Charles Sumner, Mary Church Terrell, and Booker T. Washington.

  6. National Museum of History, from the Smithsonian Institute: This site explores Africa's past and the history of the land and people. Topics presented in themes are about various forms of the wealth, working and living in Africa; more themes will be added in the coming months. History looks at Mali, the slave trade, colonialism, and more. The Learning Center contains an excellent hotlist of African Resources. Some sections of the site use browser plug-ins to enhance your experience.

For contacting African Embassies: This is a resource of and for the Washington, D.C. foreign embassy community.Classes can contact embassies to request information.  Classes can set up pen pals with students in Africa: World Pen Pals located in Saugerties, NY, has been encouraging friendship and cultural understanding since its founding in 1950 at the University of Minnesota by arranging pen pals for students around the world.
