Who are the abusers? What type of person would hurt a child? I don't know
anyone who would, or could, abuse someone!

Abusers come in all shapes and sizes. They can be your friends,
your neighbors, or your relatives. They are ordinary people caught in situations
they do not know how to handle. Typical risky situations for children include:
Parents who have not learned effective parenting skills |
Parents who are alone and have no support |
Parents who have unmet emotional needs |
A home with drug or alcohol problems |
A parent who regards their child as special or different |
A series of crises occurs in the family |
Parents themselves who were abused as children |
The use of violence or force is condoned as a problem-solving
method |
